Washington/New Delhi/Islamabad, May 10 — In a significant development amid rising tensions, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire following high-level talks mediated by the United States. The announcement came just hours after the two nations exchanged heavy fire targeting each other’s military installations.
Former US President Donald Trump made the declaration on his platform Truth Social, stating, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
The ceasefire agreement follows a diplomatic blitz led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President Vance, who held back-to-back discussions over the past 48 hours with key Indian and Pakistani leaders. Rubio revealed on X that he and Vance had spoken with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik, and Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir.
“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” Rubio wrote, confirming that talks will continue at a neutral venue to address broader bilateral issues.
However, government sources in New Delhi indicated that the ceasefire understanding was reached bilaterally. According to them, the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) initiated a call to his Indian counterpart earlier in the day, leading to mutual agreement on halting hostilities.
From Islamabad, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the development through a post on X: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
The ceasefire brings a temporary halt to an intense phase of military conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, offering a window for diplomatic dialogue and de-escalation.
