Urgent Intervention Needed as Indian Roads Claim Over 1.7 Lakh Lives in 2023

India stands at a critical crossroads concerning road safety and urgently requires innovative solutions to transform road infrastructure for the future, emphasized K K Kapila, president emeritus of the International Road Federation (IRF).

Speaking at the Global Road Infratech Summit & Expo (GRIS) on Thursday, Kapila highlighted that despite significant advancements in India's road sector, persistent issues surrounding road safety remain unresolved.

“We must reaffirm our commitment to building safe, efficient, and sustainable roads,” Kapila said, stressing the necessity for immediate action to address these ongoing concerns.

Alarming Road Accident Statistics in India

Kapila pointed out that more than 1.7 lakh lives were tragically lost on Indian roads in 2023 alone, reflecting a crisis that demands prompt and decisive intervention.

The IRF also emphasized the critical role of infrastructure in India’s journey towards becoming a USD 5 trillion economy. According to the federation, robust and safe infrastructure is essential for driving economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and ensuring road safety.

Persistent Challenges Facing India's Road Infrastructure

Despite notable progress, significant challenges persist in the areas of road congestion, safety, climate resilience, and technological integration, as outlined by the IRF.

Addressing these issues effectively will require coordinated efforts, innovative strategies, and sustained commitment to develop future-ready, safer road networks across India.
