Beijing, February 27: The Chinese Defence Ministry has stated that the militaries of India and China are implementing resolutions to resolve the prolonged standoff in eastern Ladakh in a "comprehensive and effective manner."

Speaking at a media briefing, Chinese Defence Ministry Spokesman Senior Colonel Wu Qian emphasized that both nations are working towards stabilizing the border situation. "At present, the Chinese and Indian militaries are implementing the resolutions related to the border areas comprehensively and effectively," he said in response to queries regarding the status of normalizing the situation in eastern Ladakh.

He further reiterated China’s willingness to collaborate with India to ensure peace along the border. "We are ready to work jointly with the Indian side to preserve the peace and tranquility in the border areas," Wu stated.

Progress in Disengagement and Diplomatic Efforts

The disengagement process, initiated last year, culminated in a mutual agreement between India and China to withdraw troops from Depsang and Demchok—the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh. This move ended over four years of strained relations following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

Following the agreement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held discussions on October 23 in Kazan, Russia, where they decided to revive various diplomatic dialogue mechanisms to facilitate normalization.

Subsequently, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in the 23rd Special Representative (SR) dialogue in Beijing on December 18, 2023. Furthering the diplomatic engagement, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with his Chinese counterpart Sun Weidong in Beijing on January 26, 2024, under the 'Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister' framework.

India's Stand on Normalization

India has consistently maintained that bilateral ties cannot be fully normalized without sustained peace in the border regions. While both nations have engaged in multiple military and diplomatic talks, New Delhi remains firm on the principle that a peaceful border is essential for restoring full-fledged cooperation.

With the ongoing implementation of resolutions and renewed diplomatic engagements, both sides appear to be moving towards a gradual stabilization of relations.
