India Exports Over 4.24 Lakh Tonnes of Sugar in FY2024-25 So Far; Somalia Tops Import List.webp

New Delhi, May 12 – India has exported a total of 4.24 lakh tonnes of sugar in the ongoing 2024-25 marketing year as of April 30, according to the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA). The largest share of exports, 92,758 tonnes, was shipped to Somalia.

Sugar Exports Approved From January 2025

The sugar marketing year in India spans from October to September. Although exports for FY2024- 25 were only allowed from January 20, 2025, the country has already exported 4,24,089 tonnes within a few months. The government has capped total sugar exports for the year at 10 lakh tonnes.

Export Breakdown

Of the total sugar exported:
  • White sugar accounted for 3.27 lakh tonnes
  • Refined sugar stood at 77,603 tonnes
  • Raw sugar made up 18,514 tonnes
An additional 25,000 tonnes of sugar is currently under loading, AISTA added.

Top Importing Countries

Somalia has emerged as the top importer, followed by:
  • Afghanistan: 66,927 tonnes
  • Sri Lanka: 60,357 tonnes
  • Djibouti: 47,100 tonnes

Export Outlook and Industry Demands

Based on current trends, AISTA projects that India will export up to 8 lakh tonnes of the 10 lakh tonnes permitted this year.

In its statement, AISTA also urged the central government to revise the minimum selling price of sugar, aligning it with the recently increased fair and remunerative price (FRP) of sugarcane for the 2025-26 season. Additionally, the trade body called for a 10 per cent hike in the procurement price of ethanol to support the industry’s financial viability.

These recommendations come as the sugar industry continues to balance domestic supply, ethanol blending goals, and export commitments.
