New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda reaffirmed India’s strong preparedness to tackle future pandemics and public health emergencies while addressing the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Highlighting the measures taken over the past decade to strengthen the healthcare system, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nadda asserted that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has developed a comprehensive and resilient framework to handle any potential outbreaks.

Strengthening India's Disease Surveillance and Response

Nadda outlined India's capabilities in disease monitoring and containment, emphasizing the role of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in overseeing and surveilling diseases and pathogen mutations.

"The NCDC is the apex body responsible for tracking emerging viruses and their mutations. Under its umbrella, we have an integrated disease surveillance program, which serves as a crucial platform for disease monitoring," he stated.

Additionally, he highlighted the presence of Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) deployed across states and decentralized multidisciplinary health teams for effective containment measures. The Integrated Health Information Platform provides real-time data analytics and modeling tools to anticipate and respond to potential pandemics.

Advanced Research and Diagnostic Capabilities

The minister underscored India's extensive research and diagnostic infrastructure, including the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), which operates 150 laboratories nationwide, and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, a world-class facility specializing in virus research.

“These laboratories play a crucial role in identifying mutations, assessing treatment options, and guiding appropriate medical interventions,” Nadda added.

National One Health Mission: A Holistic Approach

Recognizing the interconnected nature of human, animal, and environmental health, Nadda spoke about the National One Health Mission, launched by Prime Minister Modi.

"Diseases arise from various sources—pesticides, environmental changes, plant modifications, and even veterinary medicines. The National One Health Mission aims to assess and mitigate these risks collectively," he explained.

A Shared Global Responsibility

In a written reply, Nadda emphasized that pandemic prevention and preparedness are global responsibilities. He assured that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare continues to support states and Union Territories to enhance their pandemic response capabilities.

With robust surveillance, rapid response mechanisms, and cutting-edge research facilities, India stands well-prepared to handle future health crises, ensuring national and global health security.
