Singapore Forum Highlights India's Leadership Role in Asia's Energy Transition

Singapore, May 12 – India's remarkable progress in renewable energy has drawn international acclaim at a global climate summit, with experts positioning the country as a key driver of Asia’s clean energy transition.

Helen Clarkson, CEO of Climate Group, a leading international non-profit focused on climate action, lauded India’s achievements during the Climate Group Asia Action Summit held in Singapore on May 8. The summit convened policymakers and business leaders from across the continent to discuss strategies for sustainable growth and energy innovation.

“India has a leadership role in the energy transition in Asia. It’s making steady progress on its climate goals, with a focus on solar roll-out. This is encouraging,” Clarkson said.

India’s Renewable Energy Capacity Surpasses 220 GW

Citing the April 2025 report from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Clarkson noted that India’s total installed renewable energy capacity has reached 220 GW. Solar energy leads the sector with 48% share, followed by wind energy at 23%, large hydro at 22%, bio power at 5%, and small hydro at 2%.

She emphasized that India's advancements, particularly in solar energy deployment, illustrate how the country is aligning with global climate objectives while enhancing domestic energy security.

Asia at the Forefront of the Global Energy Shift

Clarkson stressed that Asia holds the key to solving two interconnected global challenges: the economic crisis and climate change.

“Asia can tackle two deeply linked crises in one go — economic and climate — if its businesses and governments push ahead with clean tech, innovation, energy security based on renewables, and decarbonised supply chains,” she stated. “Asia is where the transition will be won or lost.”

Bold Leadership and Strategic Investment Crucial

Urging decisive government action, Clarkson called for bold leadership, innovative solutions, and long-term investment in clean technologies.

“We need the buy-in and long-term thinking of governments. Asia truly has an incredible opportunity to build out its lead. And, we need to scale up such renewables programmes globally,” she said.

Clean Transition Makes Business Sense

According to Clarkson, insights from the summit revealed that forward-thinking business leaders already recognize the economic advantage of embracing the clean energy transition.

“Trade is the engine of the global economy – if that goes, it sends tremors through the foundations of supply chains, competitiveness, energy security, and procurement strategies,” she warned.
The summit concluded with a clear consensus: sustainable innovation and renewable energy adoption are not just environmental imperatives but economic strategies critical to Asia’s future competitiveness.
