New Delhi, April 6 — India made a resounding debut at the World Boxing Cup in Foz Do Iguacu, Brazil, clinching six medals, including a historic gold by Hitesh. This marks the nation's first-ever participation in an elite international event organised by World Boxing.

Hitesh Becomes First Indian to Win Gold at World Boxing Cup

Hitesh etched his name in the history books as the first Indian boxer to secure a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup. His final bout in the 70kg category ended in a walkover after England's Odel Kamara was unable to compete due to injury.

Expressing his joy, Hitesh highlighted the value of the team’s 10-day preparatory camp in Brazil.

“The camp helped me learn a few tactical nuances that helped me a lot in the competition. This tournament has provided us fantastic exposure at the highest level and I am happy that I could grab the gold medal,” he said.

Silver for Abhinash Jamwal, Four Bronze Medals for India

Abhinash Jamwal also impressed by reaching the final in the 65kg weight class. Despite a valiant effort, he lost to Brazil's Yuri Reis, settling for a silver medal.

Meanwhile, four other Indian boxers brought home bronze medals:
  • Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg)
  • Manish Rathore (55kg)
  • Sachin (60kg)
  • Vishal (90kg)

Strong Start to Olympic Preparations

India fielded a 10-member squad at the tournament, its first major international appearance since the Paris Olympics. The encouraging results are seen as a major morale booster as the country begins preparations for the next Olympic cycle leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

This stellar performance not only marks a milestone in India’s boxing journey but also underlines the growing prowess of Indian pugilists on the global stage.
