Indian DGMO Issues Hotline Warning Amid Breach of May 10 Understanding
New Delhi, May 11 – The Indian Armed Forces have issued a stern warning to Pakistan, asserting that any further violations of the recent military truce will be met with "fierce and punitive" retaliation. Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai said on Sunday that a hotline message was sent to his Pakistani counterpart to convey India’s "firm and clear intent" in response to renewed hostilities.Just hours after India and Pakistan reached an agreement on May 10 to cease all military actions across land, air, and sea, India accused Pakistan of breaching the understanding through ceasefire violations and drone intrusions.
"Restraint So Far, But Decisive Action If Provoked"
Addressing a press briefing, Lt Gen Ghai stated, “Through last night and early morning today, these violations were responded to robustly and dealt with as they must be. While we have exercised immense restraint, any threat to sovereignty, territorial integrity or safety of our citizens will be met with decisive force.”He also confirmed that another hotline message had been sent earlier in the day, reiterating India’s intent to act firmly if violations are repeated. “If there is any repeat tonight or subsequently, our response will be fierce and punitive,” the DGMO said.
Army Chief Grants Full Authority for Counter-Actions
Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi conducted a high-level security review earlier in the day. Following the meeting, Indian Army commanders were granted full authority to initiate countermeasures “in the kinetic domain” in case of future Pakistani violations.Fragile Truce Reached, Quickly Undone
The truce was established during a DGMO-level call on the afternoon of May 10, following four days of intense cross-border hostilities involving drone and missile attacks. The agreement called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, with a follow-up conversation scheduled for May 12 at noon to discuss mechanisms for sustaining the peace.Recalling the May 10 conversation, Lt Gen Ghai said, “Even as we were conducting a war-game review, I received a message from my Pakistani counterpart proposing a ceasefire. I spoke with him at 1535 hours, and we agreed to halt hostilities effective from 1700 hours.”
However, within a few hours of the agreement taking effect, the Pakistan Army reportedly violated the truce with cross-border firing and drone intrusions along the western front, Lt Gen Ghai revealed.
India Focused on Its Strategy
In response to media queries, Lt Gen Ghai said India is focused on its own strategic roadmap and not speculating on Pakistan's future plans. “We have a roadmap and a plan, and we will follow it diligently, to the T.”He clarified that Pakistan’s Army has not physically crossed the international boundary or Line of Control, but intrusions were observed in the air domain. There were also attempts to infiltrate during ceasefire violations, which were effectively neutralized.
“We cannot confirm whether these infiltrators were terrorists, special forces, or commandos, but every attempt was thwarted,” he concluded.
Foreign Secretary Calls for Responsible Action
On Saturday evening, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had also urged Pakistan to respond with “seriousness and responsibility” and take corrective steps in light of the violations.India’s firm diplomatic and military posture signals a no-tolerance approach toward further ceasefire breaches, as both sides prepare for the crucial follow-up DGMO-level talks scheduled for May 12.
