New Delhi, March 1: The Indian passenger vehicle market witnessed mixed sales trends in February 2025, with leading automakers Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors facing challenges, while Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Kia India, and JSW MG Motor posted growth, primarily driven by strong demand for SUVs and MPVs.
Maruti Suzuki Records Marginal Growth
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reported a slight increase in total domestic passenger vehicle sales, reaching 1,60,791 units in February 2025, up from 1,60,271 units in the same period last year.- The mini segment, including Alto and S-Presso, saw a decline to 10,226 units from 14,782 units last year.
- Compact car sales, featuring Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, rose marginally to 72,942 units from 71,627 units.
- Utility vehicles, including Grand Vitara, Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, and Jimny, recorded higher sales at 65,033 units, compared to 61,234 units last year.
Hyundai and Tata Motors Sales Decline
Hyundai Motor India reported a 5% decline in domestic dispatches, with 47,727 units sold in February compared to 50,201 units in the year-ago period."Despite geopolitical challenges, we remain optimistic that the proposed tax reforms in the Union Budget 2025 and improved liquidity will drive market demand," said Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India.
Tata Motors also faced a downturn, with domestic passenger vehicle sales (including electric vehicles) dropping 9% to 46,435 units, down from 51,267 units last year.
Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Post Double-Digit Growth
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) saw 19% growth in domestic utility vehicle sales, reaching 50,420 units, up from 42,401 units last February."This strong performance is a result of continued positive momentum for our SUV portfolio," said Veejay Nakra, President, M&M Automotive Division.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) posted a 13% year-on-year rise, selling 28,414 units in February, up from 25,220 units last year. The company dispatched 26,414 units to domestic dealers and exported 2,000 units.
"MPVs and SUVs continue to be the primary growth drivers, contributing 68% to overall sales," noted Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President of Sales, Service, and Used Car Business at Toyota Kirloskar.
Kia India and JSW MG Motor Continue Upward Trend
Kia India saw 23.8% growth in total sales, with 25,026 units sold in February, compared to 20,200 units in the same month last year."Kia India continues to grow steadily, driven by strong customer demand and our commitment to delivering cutting-edge mobility solutions," said Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales & Marketing.
JSW MG Motor India also reported a 16.3% rise in retail sales, reaching 4,956 units, up from 4,261 units last year.
Two-Wheeler Segment: Royal Enfield and Suzuki Motorcycle Sales Performance
Royal Enfield recorded a 19% year-on-year increase, with total sales reaching 90,670 units, compared to 75,935 units last year.- Domestic sales rose 19% to 80,799 units, up from 67,922 units.
- Exports surged 23% to 9,871 units, compared to 8,013 units in February 2024.
