Indian embassy in Libya facilitates return of 18 Indian nationals from Benghazi

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – The Indian embassy in Libya has successfully facilitated the return of 18 Indian nationals who had been stranded in Benghazi for several weeks. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the development on Tuesday.

The workers, who had been lured to Libya by fraudulent recruitment agents, found themselves stuck in the city without proper support. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "The Embassy of India in Libya facilitated the return of 18 Indian nationals from Benghazi, Libya. They will be arriving in India tomorrow."

These individuals had traveled to Libya with hopes of securing employment but were left stranded after their recruitment proved to be a scam. Jaiswal highlighted that the embassy worked closely with local authorities to ensure the safe return of the workers, assisting them in obtaining the necessary authorization and travel documents.

During the weeks of their ordeal, the embassy maintained constant contact with the stranded workers, providing assistance with basic necessities. "While their case was being addressed, the Embassy remained in touch with them to ensure their well-being and helped them with daily living supplies," Jaiswal said.

Notably, three other Indian nationals from the same group had returned to India last October with the help of the embassy.

Jaiswal also expressed gratitude to Libyan authorities for their support and cooperation in resolving the case. "The government of India remains committed to the welfare and safety of all Indians abroad," he added.

The successful return of the 18 workers highlights the ongoing efforts by the Indian government to protect and assist its citizens overseas, especially in challenging situations.
