New Delhi, March 7: An officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) tragically ended his life by jumping from the fourth floor of a building located in the Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi on Friday. Delhi Police, who confirmed the incident, said no foul play is suspected.
The deceased has been identified as Jitendra Rawat, aged between 35 and 40. He was serving as a Director at the Overseas Employment and Protectorate General of Emigrants under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
According to police sources, Rawat was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression. He resided on the first floor of the MEA Society building in Chanakyapuri, along with his mother. Early Friday morning, he went up to the fourth floor and jumped. No suicide note has been recovered from the location, authorities said.
Delhi Police received a PCR call regarding the tragic incident at around 6:20 am from the security guard of the society. Rawat was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police also stated that Rawat's wife and children live in Dehradun. They have been informed and are currently en route to Delhi.
Reacting to the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the death of one of its officers but refrained from naming him officially, respecting the family's privacy during this difficult time.
"The Ministry stands with the family in this hour of grief and difficulty," an official statement from MEA read. "Further details are not being released bearing in mind the need to respect the family's privacy in this time of bereavement."
The Ministry further stated that it is providing all necessary assistance to the officer's family and remains in constant touch with the Delhi Police regarding the investigation.
