Singapore, March 7 – An Indian national, identified as 35-year-old Sajan Oberoi, was sentenced to one year and 10 weeks in prison by a Singapore court on Friday after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including drug-related offences.
According to a report by Channel News Asia, Oberoi admitted to five charges, of which two involved drug possession and consumption. The court also considered 15 additional charges, such as criminal intimidation and the use of criminal force, during sentencing.
Arrested at the Courthouse with Methamphetamine
On October 24, 2023, Oberoi, who holds Permanent Resident status in Singapore, consumed methamphetamine at his residence before heading to the State Courts for a pre-trial conference relating to separate offenses. Upon arriving at the courthouse compound in the afternoon, Oberoi attempted to conceal a packet containing at least 1.17 grams of methamphetamine, along with a straw and three pieces of aluminum foil, in nearby bushes. He intended to retrieve the drugs after his hearing concluded.
However, police officers monitoring the area witnessed Oberoi hiding the drugs and promptly arrested him around 1:45 pm. Investigations confirmed that the drugs were intended solely for his personal consumption.
Multiple Incidents of Violence and Theft
In a separate incident on August 17, 2024, Oberoi assaulted a 35-year-old man by striking him on the head with a beer bottle at a bar located in Boat Quay, a popular nightlife and dining area in Singapore's Central Business District (CBD).Later that same month, Oberoi committed theft at a Cold Storage Supermarket situated in Raffles City, another prominent location within the CBD. He attempted to steal bottles of Monkey Shoulder whisky and Maker's Mark bourbon but was apprehended on-site by a loss prevention officer.
Additionally, Oberoi was found guilty of molesting a 35-year-old female server at a bar in 2023. Court records revealed that he kissed the woman on her left temple when she leaned closer to understand what he was saying.
Repeat Offender with Previous Convictions
During the trial, prosecutors highlighted Oberoi’s history of criminal activity. In September 2023, he was previously convicted for offences involving violence and fined SGD 18,500 (approximately USD 13,900).Prosecutors had recommended a jail term between one year and 10 to 12 weeks, ultimately resulting in Oberoi's current sentence.
Authorities emphasized that Oberoi’s multiple offences, particularly his drug-related actions within the vicinity of the court complex and repeated violent behaviour, justified the severity of his sentencing.
