New Delhi, May 11 — In the aftermath of heightened India-Pakistan tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has launched humanitarian relief operations in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, offering critical support to civilians impacted by recent hostilities.
The unrest follows Operation Sindoor, conducted by the Indian armed forces on May 7, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was a retaliatory move after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, mostly tourists.
In response, Pakistani forces engaged in three consecutive nights of shelling across the LoC, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents from border districts to safer zones. Authorities remain on high alert even after both nations agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday evening, bringing temporary respite from the escalating conflict.
To aid the displaced and distressed civilians, IYC National President Uday Bhanu Chib initiated relief efforts under the SOS IYC programme, with direction from senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. The initiative includes distribution of food, medical assistance, and temporary shelter to affected families through camps set up in conflict-hit areas.
“Our workers are standing firmly with the people in this hour of crisis, with compassion, dedication and courage,” said Chib, while also praising the Indian Army for its "precise and effective response" to the deadly April attack.
The IYC has committed to continuing these relief measures until full normalcy is restored in the region.
