February 14, Srinagar: Kanihama, globally known for its intricate Kani shawls, has been developed as a model craft village to preserve and promote Kashmir's traditional handicrafts.
Officials said that infrastructure works worth more than Rs. 3 crore have been carried out to strengthen the village's infrastructure. The works include the construction of roads, public amenities, fencing, artisan workshops, and other support facilities aimed at improving the working conditions for artisans and enhancing the visitor experience.
Kanihama has been officially designated as a dedicated craft village in the district and across the Union Territory, highlighting its role in safeguarding centuries-old craftsmanship. The initiative also includes community events, awareness campaigns, exhibitions, and artisan engagement programs to showcase the village's unique heritage.
The village is home to skilled artisans who are engaged in weaving the renowned Kani shawls, as well as pottery and other traditional crafts. Several national award-winning artisans continue to practice and pass on their skills, while also creating employment opportunities for local youth.
Located along the Gulmarg road, the craft village has emerged as a key attraction for tourists visiting Kashmir. Visitors can observe live demonstrations of intricate weaving techniques and interact directly with artisans.
Officials described the development as a significant step toward preserving traditional crafts while promoting tourism and sustainable livelihoods in the region.
