Israel Screens 'The Diplomat' to Welcome New Indian Envoy JP Singh

Historic Film Premiere Marks Unique Diplomatic Gesture in Jerusalem

In an unprecedented diplomatic welcome, the Israeli Foreign Ministry hosted the world premiere of The Diplomat, a film starring John Abraham and based on a real-life crisis navigated by India's newly appointed Ambassador to Israel, JP Singh.

The screening, held Tuesday evening at the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s auditorium in Jerusalem, marked the first time such a cultural gesture was extended to honor an incoming foreign diplomat.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar Welcomes JP Singh

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar personally met Ambassador JP Singh ahead of the screening, offering his best wishes for a successful tenure. Although he had to excuse himself from the screening due to an urgent call from the Prime Minister’s Office, Sa’ar’s presence underscored the significance of the event.

Jaishankar Commends Singh and John Abraham

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the gathering through a recorded message. Highlighting the film’s relevance to the diplomatic community, Jaishankar noted, “Not every situation has an SOP. Every day is a new day.” He acknowledged having an insider's perspective on the real-life incident but refrained from commenting further, having not yet watched the film.

Jaishankar praised the lead actor, John Abraham, for his commitment and extended his best wishes to diplomats globally. “We work mostly behind the scenes, but an occasional insight into an unusual occurrence is always a welcome departure,” he remarked.

Israel Affirms Strategic Ties with India

Eden Bar Tal, Director General of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, lauded the bilateral relationship, calling it “a partnership between two ancient nations” rooted in shared values and a commitment to innovation.

“This inspiring film illustrates the quiet heroism of diplomacy, which often unfolds far from the spotlight but plays a decisive role in shaping peace and saving lives,” Bar Tal said. He praised Ambassador Singh for bringing “great honour to the diplomatic profession” and emphasized the potential for deeper collaboration between the entertainment industries of both nations.

Reflecting on his recent “strategic visit” to India, Bar Tal said, “The hospitality, creativity, and kindness of the Indian people left a lasting impression on me.”

The Diplomat: A Film Rooted in Real Diplomacy

The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair, was released in India on March 14. The film depicts a high-stakes diplomatic episode where a woman, Uzma Ahmed (played by Sadia Khateeb), seeks refuge at the Indian High Commission claiming she was abducted and forced to marry a Pakistani man. As tensions mount, JP Singh (portrayed by John Abraham) must maneuver through complex international dynamics to ensure her return to India.

Singh, addressing the audience post-screening, emphasized two key takeaways from the incident: the importance of teamwork and political leadership. He credited the Indian Embassy staff and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clear directive—“the life of every citizen matters”—as instrumental during the crisis.

“Who will understand that better than you and your government, facing an acute problem regarding hostages? We pray for the safe and early return of all the hostages back home,” Singh added, drawing a poignant parallel with current challenges faced by Israel.

Emotional Resonance and Cultural Diplomacy

For many in attendance, the event went beyond cinema. Nurit Tinari, Head of the Cultural Division at Israel’s Foreign Ministry, shared her reaction: “After watching the film, I felt proud to be a diplomat. Sometimes one ponders if it was the right choice in life. The movie has convinced me that I chose the right path.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry hailed the evening as a celebration of the enduring friendship between India and Israel, reinforcing the growing blend of cultural diplomacy with strategic ties.
