Chairman V Narayanan Says Missions Are Needs-Driven, Not Competitive
Chennai, May 15 – Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman V Narayanan on Thursday reaffirmed that the country’s space programmes are designed primarily for the safety and security of its people. He also confirmed that ISRO is set to launch its 101st mission on May 18.Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Narayanan emphasized that ISRO’s initiatives are guided by national interests rather than competition with other countries.
"All our programmes are for the safety and security of our people and country. We don't compete with any other nation. Our mission is planned based on our needs," he said when asked about possible ISRO launches for the Indian armed forces.
PSLV-C61 to Launch RISAT-18 on May 18
Narayanan announced that ISRO's upcoming launch would feature the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C61) carrying RISAT-18, an Earth Observation Satellite. Scheduled for May 18, the launch will enhance India’s surveillance and disaster management capabilities."We have successfully launched the one-hundredth rocket from Sriharikota in January. India's 101st satellite – RISAT-18 – will be launched on May 18," he stated.
Decades of Technological Progress
Reflecting on India’s progress in space technology, Narayanan noted that the country’s journey began in 1979 with the launch of the SLV-3, which was almost entirely successful.With its focus on national priorities and consistent advancements in space technology, ISRO continues to position itself as a pivotal force in strengthening India's strategic and scientific frontiers.“Then, the SLV-3 was 98 per cent success and our first successful launch was in 1980,” he added.
