Srinagar political spectrum unites in support of US-mediated ceasefire

Srinagar, May 10 – Political parties across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday welcomed the announcement of a full and immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, calling it a long-awaited step toward regional peace and stability.

The announcement was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who stated that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both nations had agreed to halt all forms of military action — land, air, and sea — starting from 5 pm Saturday. This declaration closely followed a post by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social, crediting Washington's mediation for the breakthrough.

Omar Abdullah: Relief Comes, But Late

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep gratitude for the decision, although he lamented the delay in reaching it.

“Better late than never, but had this ceasefire come two or three days earlier, perhaps the bloodshed we saw and the precious lives we lost would have been saved,” he said.
Abdullah emphasized the state's duty to now provide relief and compensation to the affected families and individuals across conflict-hit regions including Jammu, Poonch, Rajouri, and Tangdhar. He also hoped the resumption of Haj flights, previously suspended due to airport closures, would follow.

Farooq Abdullah: Trust Deficit Must Be Bridged

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah, in a statement from party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha, also hailed the ceasefire. He stressed that those living along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) had suffered immensely from the hostilities.

“This measure will greatly alleviate the suffering of our people who have been caught in the crossfire,” he said.
While reiterating his party’s stand for a lasting friendship between India and Pakistan, Abdullah underscored that Pakistan must address India’s concerns on cross-border terrorism to truly bridge the trust gap.

Mehbooba Mufti: Permanent Peace Must Be the Goal

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the development through a video message, calling it a much-needed relief for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Terrorists should not determine when there should be war or peace between India and Pakistan,” she said, while denouncing terrorism as unacceptable.
She called for political dialogue over military solutions, advocating that India, as the larger nation, should play a constructive regional role to foster permanent peace and prosperity.

“Our country should act like a big brother, not just to Pakistan but the entire region,” she added, hoping for sustained peace not derailed by sporadic incidents.

CPI(M) and Peoples' Conference: Ceasefire Brings Relief

CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami termed the ceasefire a significant relief for citizens on both sides of the border. Similarly, Peoples’ Conference chief Sajad Lone said it had brought a "sense of relief everywhere."

“The inhabitants of the border areas in J and K have had a harrowing time. Hope they are able to resume their lives,” Lone remarked, urging society to support the rebuilding of affected homes.

A Unified Hope for Peace

From the National Conference to the PDP and CPI(M), political voices in Jammu and Kashmir have shown rare unanimity in their response to the ceasefire. The collective hope remains clear: that this ceasefire marks the beginning of a sustained peace process in a region long scarred by conflict.
