Srinagar, February 26 – In a significant step towards digital policing, the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Awantipora has registered its first electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) following a complaint received via email, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The complaint was lodged by Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat, a resident of New Colony Khrew, against Adil Ahmad Bhat and Bilal Ahmad Bhat, who also reside in the same area. According to a police spokesperson, the complainant alleged that the accused physically assaulted his family, resulting in injuries.

To support his claim, Bhat provided an Outpatient Department (OPD) ticket from the Primary Health Centre in Khrew and a copy of his Aadhaar card as evidence. After examining the complaint, the police took cognizance of the matter. They registered an e-FIR under case number 17/2025 at Khrew police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

This move towards electronic registration of complaints marks a shift in law enforcement practices in the region. The development follows a similar case in Handwara, where police recently registered an FIR based on a complaint received via WhatsApp.

The introduction of digital platforms for lodging complaints is expected to enhance accessibility and efficiency in the justice system, making it easier for citizens to report grievances.
