New Delhi, May 12 – A Bengaluru-based couple has filed a police complaint alleging the theft of jewellery worth around ₹30 lakh and ₹30,000 in cash from their check-in baggage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of April 26 at Terminal 1 of the IGI Airport. The complainants, Bhagirath Singh Rajpurohit and his wife, discovered the valuables missing upon reaching their home in Bengaluru.
Valuables Discovered Missing After Flight
Rajpurohit, a banker, said they had travelled to their home state of Rajasthan to attend a wedding on April 14 and were returning to Bengaluru via Delhi. Their trolley suitcase, which was checked in at around 7:20 am on April 26, was later found tampered with.“The jewellery was in a steel box placed inside the suitcase, along with ₹30,000 in cash stored in three pouches,” Rajpurohit stated. “After we landed in Bengaluru around 2 pm and reached home, we found all these valuables missing.”
He added that the suitcase had both a number lock and a small physical lock, which appeared untouched. However, they discovered a cut mark inside a fold of the bag, indicating a possible breach.
Items Stolen Include Ancestral Jewellery
According to the complaint, the missing items include approximately 29–30 tolas of gold ornaments such as earrings, bangles, anklets, and an armlet. In addition to jewellery and cash, a bank passbook and an Aadhaar card were also reported stolen.“This was all the gold my wife had, made at her ancestral place,” Rajpurohit said, appealing to the authorities for swift action. “We request police and airport officials to catch the culprits and help us recover our valuables.”
FIR Registered; CCTV Footage Being Examined
The Delhi Police have registered an FIR and begun an investigation. “Multiple teams have been formed and we are checking CCTV footage from the airport,” a police officer confirmed. In a startling revelation, Rajpurohit also informed police that his father’s gold chain was stolen in a similar fashion. His father had boarded a separate flight to Dibrugarh from Delhi on the same day, just 30 minutes after their flight.
The couple suspects that airport or airline staff may be involved in the thefts.
