Traditional Attire, Tribal Processions Mark the Statewide Celebrations
Ranchi, April 1:Jharkhand’s grandest tribal festival, Sarhul, was celebrated with deep religious fervour and vibrant traditional displays across the state on Tuesday. The streets of Ranchi and other towns came alive as thousands of people adorned in traditional attire took part in cultural processions and rituals, highlighting the state’s rich tribal heritage.
CM Hemant Soren and Wife Kalpana Participate in Ceremonies
Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife, MLA Kalpana Soren, participated in the Sarhul rituals at the Tribal College Hostel in Karam Toli, Ranchi. Addressing the gathering, Soren emphasized the importance of preserving cultural identity and environmental harmony.As a symbolic gesture promoting environmental consciousness, the Chief Minister planted a Sakhua tree on the hostel premises. He later joined in the celebrations by dancing to the rhythms of traditional instruments like the dhol and mandar."Festivals connect us to our traditions, civilisation, culture and faith. Our ancestors have preserved this nature festival for generations, and it is our duty to carry it forward," he said.
Two-Day State Holiday Announced for Sarhul
Recognising the cultural significance of Sarhul, the Jharkhand government has declared a two-day state holidaystarting this year. Sharing the announcement on social media, Soren noted the longstanding demand of the tribal community for extended observance of the festival."Considering the significance of this great and holy festival of the tribal community, I have declared a 2-day state holiday starting this year," Soren posted on X.
Governor, Political Leaders Extend Greetings
Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar conveyed his best wishes on the occasion, calling Sarhul a reminder of environmental conservation and harmony with nature.Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Champai Soren also took part in the rituals, performing them at Sarna Toli in Hatma, Ranchi."Come, let us all take a pledge to preserve and promote nature on this auspicious occasion," he wrote on X.
A Festival Honouring Nature and Tribal Traditions
Observed on the third day of Chaitra, Sarhul is a three-day spring festival celebrated by tribes such as the Oraon, Munda, and Ho communities. It is marked by prayers to the Sal tree and expressions of gratitude to Mother Naturefor sustenance and shelter.The day began with traditional rituals, including a rain forecast ceremony performed by tribal priests known as pahans. As per tradition, two earthen pitchers filled with water were placed beneath a Sal tree overnight at the Sarna Sthal. Based on the outcome, priest Jaglal Pahan predicted that Jharkhand may experience slightly below-normal rainfall this year.
The celebrations culminated in Shobha Yatras (processions) that weaved through key city locations, including the iconic Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi, drawing widespread public participation.
