"I Feel a Lot Lighter": Buttler Enjoying Mental Freedom in IPL 2025

Mumbai, April 4 — Jos Buttler is relishing his fresh start with the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing Indian Premier League, having stepped down as England's white-ball captain following a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign. Unburdened by leadership pressure, the 34-year-old says he feels "lighter" and more focused on his game than ever.

Buttler, under the spotlight for his recent form and team switch, has responded emphatically with the bat. In just three matches, he has notched up two fifties, including an unbeaten 73 that steered his side to victory. With 166 runs, he currently stands among the top run-scorers of the season.

"I certainly feel a lot lighter," Buttler shared. "Being a captain, when you're not getting the results, it can weigh heavy. Now, being free of that has given me a lot more space in my mind. I feel relaxed and can just focus on my own game."

Thriving in a New Role and Environment

Though long established as an opener in T20 cricket, Buttler has seamlessly adapted to the No. 3 position for both England and Gujarat Titans.

"I'm really comfortable with batting at No. 3. I've been doing it for England recently and am using my experiences as both an opener and middle-order player to contribute to a fantastic team," he said.
The transition to Gujarat Titans, after six seasons with Rajasthan Royals, has also gone smoothly. Buttler praised the team atmosphere and communication since his arrival.

"I've been really warmly welcomed. It's a friendly setup, and I feel settled and comfortable here. The communication from the start has been great," he noted.

Praise for Teammates Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan

Buttler highlighted the strength of the Titans’ top order, particularly lauding captain Shubman Gill and young sensation Sai Sudharsan, with whom he forms a formidable batting trio.

"Gill is a fantastic captain. He leads from the front with how he plays and prepares. I'm really enjoying working under him," said Buttler.
On Sudharsan, who has already amassed 186 runs with two fifties this season, Buttler was equally complimentary.

"Sai is a brilliant player. I knew he was good, but seeing him up close, he's fantastic. Ultra consistent with an amazing all-round game — he’s definitely one to watch for the future."

Top-Heavy Strategy Key to T20 Success

Buttler also emphasized the importance of top-order contributions in T20 cricket, stating that the most successful IPL teams often rely on strong starts.

"It's kind of a trait of all teams that play well — someone who bats long helps the team post a good score. The top three or four have that responsibility to make impactful innings," he explained. "We want to play with freedom, but doing that over a sustained period is the key."
As the tournament progresses, Buttler’s form and mindset could be a major asset for Gujarat Titans in their title push. His return to peak performance, powered by mental clarity and a supportive team environment, has already made a strong impression in IPL 2025.
