New Delhi, May 14 – Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was formally sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath during a solemn ceremony at the Ganatantra Mandap in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Following the ceremony, Chief Justice Gavai arrived at the Supreme Court premises where he paid floral tributes at the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, underscoring his reverence for the nation's icons of justice and equality.
At 64, Justice Gavai becomes the first Buddhist and the second Dalit to hold the position of Chief Justice of India, following in the footsteps of Justice K G Balakrishnan.
He takes over from Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired on Tuesday after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.
Justice Gavai, who was elevated to the Supreme Court bench on May 24, 2019, will serve as Chief Justice for a little over six months, concluding on November 23, 2025.
