"He has earned it by serving the poor and needy," says his mother, Kamaltai Gavai

Amravati, Maharashtra, May 14 – As Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai assumes office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, his mother Kamaltai Gavai reflects on a journey defined by resilience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to justice. Describing it as a moment of immense pride, she said her son's rise to the top is a reward for his tireless dedication and social service.

Justice Gavai, a native of Amravati in Maharashtra, succeeds Justice Sanjiv Khanna. His elevation to the country’s highest judicial post is particularly meaningful for his family, who have long upheld a legacy of public service. His father, the late R.S. Gavai, was a prominent leader of the Republican Party of India and served as Governor of Bihar, Kerala, and Sikkim.

Early Struggles and Strong Values

Recalling his childhood, Kamaltai said, "From a very young age, under difficult circumstances and after overcoming several problems, he has reached such a high position." Justice Gavai completed his early education in a modest school in Amravati, a testament to the humble beginnings that shaped his worldview.

"As a mother, I wanted my children to follow in their father’s footsteps — to serve society, respect people, and deliver justice irrespective of their background," she added. “He has done justice to every position he has held, and I am confident he will do the same as CJI.”

A Legacy of Social Commitment

Kamaltai also highlighted her son's philanthropic work, saying he often provides financial assistance to those in need and helps with hospital expenses. "I think he got a reward for his service to the poor and needy," she said with pride.

Justice Gavai’s younger sister, Kirti Arjun, also shared her joy, saying his achievement is not just a celebration for their family but for the entire state of Maharashtra. “A son of Amravati, from a very ordinary background, has reached such a prestigious position,” she said.

A Vision Grounded in Justice and Compassion

Kirti described her brother as both sensitive and pragmatic. “He works with both his brain and heart. His decisions reflect foresight that can help advance society,” she said, expressing confidence that he would carry forward the legacy of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Looking ahead, Kamaltai hopes that Justice Gavai’s work as Chief Justice will be people-centric and contribute meaningfully to the nation. “It is a moment of great joy and satisfaction,” she said, adding, “He will support the country with people-oriented decisions.”

As Justice Gavai steps into his new role, his family’s words underline the depth of his journey, rooted in service, powered by determination, and guided by the values he inherited and upheld.
