New Delhi, May 14 – Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was formally sworn in on Wednesday as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) during a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu.
Justice Gavai assumes the highest judicial position in the country following the retirement of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who demitted office on Tuesday upon reaching the age of 65.
Elevated to the Supreme Court bench on May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai brings with him extensive judicial experience. His tenure as the Chief Justice is set to last over six months, concluding on November 23.
Marking a notable gesture, Justice Gavai took the oath of affirmation in Hindi, reflecting linguistic inclusivity in the nation’s top judiciary.
