Mumbai, February 28, 2025: Bollywood actor and BJP Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut appeared before a special court in Mumbai on Friday in connection with a defamation case filed by veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar.
The special magistrate court, designated to handle cases involving Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs), conducted the hearing in the afternoon. Ranaut's court appearance came after a stern directive from the court during the previous hearing, which had given her a final opportunity to attend proceedings, following Akhtar's plea seeking a non-bailable warrant against her.
Javed Akhtar had originally filed the defamation complaint against Kangana Ranaut in 2020, alleging that the actor made defamatory statements against him during a televised interview. According to Akhtar's complaint, Ranaut's remarks caused significant damage to his reputation. Specifically, Akhtar objected to Ranaut allegedly associating him with a so-called "coterie" operating within Bollywood, in the wake of actor Sushant Singh Rajput's alleged suicide.
Initially, the defamation case was being heard in a magistrate court located in Andheri, Mumbai. However, after Ranaut was elected as an MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in 2024, the case was transferred to the special court designated specifically for handling cases involving elected representatives.
Further developments in the case are awaited, with additional details expected soon.
