Thane's Green Drive Empowers Women and Transgender Community Through E-Mobility

Thane, May 17—In a landmark step toward social inclusion and sustainable urban transport, five e-rickshaws were distributed in Thane on Saturday as part of a collaborative initiative for ecological progress and empowerment. According to the organizers, Kareen Aade was among the recipients, having become Maharashtra’s first transgender woman e-rickshaw driver.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Lake City, Samarth Bharat Forum, and Atos India. Four women and one transgender individual were handed over the e-rickshaws, all of whom received driving training, help obtaining licenses, and assistance securing necessary operational permits.

Driving Change: A Step Towards Safer, Inclusive Mobility

Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat stressed the importance of road safety, revealing that 20 accident-related deaths had occurred in the Thane area in recent months.

“Some of these tragic losses could have been prevented if traffic rules had been followed. I am hopeful that these women e-rickshaw drivers will strictly observe traffic norms and inspire others by setting a responsible example,” Shirsat remarked.

The initiative advances environmental goals through clean energy transportation and breaks barriers by integrating underrepresented groups into the public transport sector.
