New Delhi, February 26—The Karnataka government has officially designated 5,678 acres and 32 guntas of land in Yelahanka taluk, Bengaluru Urban district, as the Greater Hesaraghatta Grassland Conservation Reserve. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has praised this decision.

The notification, issued on February 24, follows the state Cabinet's decision last month to designate the grassland as a conservation reserve under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. A former Union environment minister, Ramesh, lauded the move, emphasizing its alignment with economic growth, social development, and ecological sustainability.

A Step Towards Sustainability

Highlighting Karnataka's achievements since May 2023 in attracting investments and implementing welfare programs like income support and food security, Ramesh described the grassland protection initiative as a "good decision. "He underscored the reserve's significance as a large catchment area essential for groundwater recharge, benefiting farmers in surrounding villages and augmenting BeBengaluru's water supply.

Additionally, Ramesh pointed out that the conservation reserve would act as a natural carbon sink, mitigating climate change effects in urban areas while preserving a rich biodiversity ecosystem. The protected zone will be a safe habitat for migratory birds from Europe, Central Asia, the Himalayas, and even the Arctic Circle.

No Impact on Existing Land Rights

According to the notification, the Karnataka government has deemed the conservation reserve essential due to its ecological, faunal, floral, and geomorphological significance. The order clarifies that the reserve does not include any patta land (private land holdings) and will not impact local villagers' existing rights or privileges.

Ramesh hailed the decision as a model for other states, reinforcing that economic progress and environmental conservation coexist.
