Congress-led UDF Mobilizes Public Resistance Against Narcotics in Kerala
Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, announced on Friday that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) will actively seek the support of religious leaders, community figures, social organizations, cultural representatives, and public personalities to build a robust resistance against the drug mafia operating across the state. In an official statement issued by his office, Satheesan confirmed that he would personally send letters and directly meet influential community and social leaders, requesting their collaboration in combating Kerala's growing narcotics crisis.
Drug Addiction Posing Severe Threat to Kerala's Youth
Satheesan highlighted the alarming situation, stating that Kerala is currently experiencing an unprecedented social crisis, marked by widespread drug addiction among children, students, and youth. This surge in narcotics abuse has led to increased incidents of violence and even murders committed under the influence of drugs."This cannot be tolerated. We should not remain silent any longer. We must fight against the social scourge of drug addiction together to safeguard future generations. The goal is to create widespread resistance against drug mafias," said Satheesan.
Opposition Alleges Government's Inaction and Patronage to Drug Mafias
Criticizing the state government's alleged inaction, Satheesan warned of dire consequences if immediate measures aren't taken to identify and shut down drug supply sources. He claimed that drug mafias had penetrated even the remotest regions of Kerala, capable of delivering narcotics within 15 minutes. The opposition leader further emphasized that rising drug consumption is significantly altering the nature and intensity of violence perpetrated by addicts. He accused the state government of indirectly supporting drug mafias by providing them with political patronage.
"No matter who provides protection, we must unite to save Kerala from the grip of the drug mafia," Satheesan asserted.
UDF Calls for Comprehensive Action and Public Involvement
Satheesan called for an urgent and comprehensive action plan designed to reduce public fear, curb escalating violence, and apprehend individuals involved in narcotics distribution. He emphasized the critical importance of active participation from every segment of society to effectively counter the drug menace."The active intervention from all levels of society is essential," he said.
The UDF, according to Satheesan, has consistently voiced concerns about the narcotics threat within Kerala, both inside and outside the Assembly. Recently, the coalition organized a one-day fast outside the Secretariat to demonstrate their strong opposition to drug use and governmental inaction.
Satheesan concluded by declaring that, given the state's continued neglect of this critical issue, the UDF will now initiate a broader public movement aimed at rallying popular support against the spread of drug mafias throughout Kerala.
