The altercation reportedly originated from a dispute during a farewell party at the tuition centre on February 23. The disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation on Thursday, February 27, around 5 p.m. on Vezhuppur Road, involving students from two local schools, police reported.
According to authorities, tensions flared when the music was abruptly stopped during a dance performance at the farewell event. Though the situation was initially managed by teachers and other attendees, hostilities reignited days later. On Thursday evening, a group of approximately 15 students, including Shahabas, engaged in another confrontation, leading to the violent attack.
Initially, Shahabas did not appear to have sustained serious injuries and was taken to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital. However, after returning home, his condition deteriorated, prompting his family to shift him to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where he remains in a coma.
Shahabas’s father, Iqbal, has demanded justice, alleging that his son was deliberately targeted and suggesting the possible involvement of adults in the attack. "My son was never involved in fights. This was an attempt to eliminate him. He was taken away by a friend at around 4:30 p.m. and returned home at 7 p.m. without saying a word. Later, when he started vomiting, we rushed him to the hospital," he told a news channel.
The Thamarassery police have taken five students into custody and registered a case for assault, rioting, and unlawful assembly. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain further details and the possible involvement of others in the incident.
