Kozhikode, Kerala – March 1: A 16-year-old student, Muhammed Shahabas, succumbed to severe head injuries in the early hours of Saturday after being involved in a violent clash near a private tuition centre in Kozhikode district. The incident, which stemmed from a dispute between students, has led to the detention of five individuals who now face murder charges, police confirmed.

Fatal Altercation Following Farewell Party Dispute

The altercation reportedly originated from a disagreement during a farewell party at a tuition centre in Thamarassery on February 23. The situation escalated, culminating in a violent confrontation on Thursday evening around 5 PM on Vezhuppur Road.

Authorities revealed that approximately 15 students, including Shahabas and others from the tuition centre, engaged in a physical fight with another group. Though initially appearing to have sustained minor injuries, Shahabas was taken to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital for medical attention. However, his condition deteriorated after returning home, necessitating an urgent transfer to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital, where he remained in a coma. He was on ventilator support until he passed away around 1 AM on Saturday.

Investigation and Legal Action

Following Shahabas’s demise, the police have taken five students into custody. Officials confirmed that murder charges would be invoked against them, and they would be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
