Kerala Student Murder Case: Police Confirm Premeditated Attack, Investigation Deepens

Kozhikode, Kerala, March 3: In a chilling revelation, Kerala police have confirmed that the murder of a Class 10 student at Thamarassery near Kozhikode was carried out after careful planning. The details emerged from WhatsApp group conversations among the students involved, indicating a premeditated act.

A senior police officer shared insights into the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the need to assess the psychological state of the accused students post-incident. Searches conducted at the homes of the students aimed at recovering the murder weapon have intensified the probe. Authorities are actively scrutinizing the mobile phones, WhatsApp communications, and Instagram accounts of the suspects.

Crucially, investigators are also probing the potential involvement of adults in this tragic incident. This line of inquiry gains prominence following reports suggesting connections between the father of the main accused student and local quotation gangs as well as smuggling networks.

Meanwhile, Iqbal, father of the deceased student Muhammed Shahabas, expressed anguish and dissatisfaction over the decision allowing the five accused students to sit for their ongoing SSLC exams from within a juvenile home. Speaking to the media, Iqbal argued that permitting the accused to take exams immediately following such a grave crime sets a dangerous precedent.

“Allowing murder accused to sit for exams would only encourage children to resort to violence again. They should have been barred from exams for a year and allowed to appear next year instead. Permitting them to write exams now sends a message that no matter what they do, there will be no real consequences,” Iqbal stated.
Initially, authorities had planned for the accused students to appear for their exams at a school in Thamarassery. However, strong protests led by activists from the Kerala Students Union (KSU), Youth Congress, and Muslim Students Federation (MSF) compelled officials to shift the exam location to the juvenile home in Vellimadukunnu.

The incident took place when 16-year-old Shahabas sustained critical head injuries during a violent clash among students near a private tuition centre in Thamarassery. Despite being treated at the intensive care unit of Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital, Shahabas succumbed to his injuries around 1:00 am on Saturday.

Police subsequently arrested five students linked to the murder and have charged them accordingly. All five juveniles were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board, and further judicial proceedings are underway.

Authorities continue to unravel the intricate details behind this disturbing incident, with the community anxiously awaiting justice for the victim and his grieving family.
