Kannur, Kerala, March 1: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, George Kurian, announced on Saturday that a climate change mitigation plan will be implemented in six fishing villages in Kerala. The initiative aims to address the environmental challenges faced by coastal communities.
Kurian made the announcement during the state-level inauguration of the Integrated Modern Coastal Fishing Village Project in Thalassery. As part of the project, the minister also revealed plans to expand the installation of transponders in one lakh fishing boats in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This expansion is expected to enhance maritime safety and navigation for fishermen.
Modernization of Fishing Boats and Extended Sea Access
The minister further stated that fishing boats will be equipped with modern systems, and fishermen will receive proper training in their operation. Additionally, new measures will allow them to venture up to 200 nautical miles into the sea, maximizing their fishing opportunities.Kurian emphasized India's commitment to achieving global leadership in fish resources, highlighting Kerala’s significant role in utilizing government funds for fisheries development.
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana to Boost Coastal Infrastructure
The Fishing Village Project, part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), includes several infrastructure development initiatives. These include:- Installation of high mast lights and cold storage facilities
- Construction of fish landing centres and fish markets
- Promotion of aqua tourism activities
- Expansion of fish farming in cages and ornamental fish farming
- Distribution of electric fish vending kiosks and e-scooters to fishermen
100 Fishing Villages Selected for Development
Under the first phase of the Fishing Village Project, 100 villages across India have been identified for development, out of which nine are in Kerala.The initiative aims at comprehensive social and economic upliftment of coastal fishing communities while addressing climate change challenges and modernizing the fisheries sector.
This move is expected to significantly enhance the livelihoods of fishermen and ensure sustainable fisheries management in Kerala.
