Kerala to review anganwadi menu after child's request for biryani, chicken fry

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 3 (PTI) – A heartwarming video of a young boy requesting biryani and chicken fry instead of upma at an anganwadi has sparked discussions about revising the food menu in childcare centers across Kerala.

State Health, Women, and Child Welfare Minister Veena George, on Monday, shared the viral video featuring the child, identified as Shanku, on her Facebook page. She acknowledged his innocent request and announced that the anganwadi menu would be reviewed accordingly.

Extending her warm regards to Shanku, his mother, and the anganwadi staff, George stated, “The menu will be reviewed, taking Shanku’s suggestion into account.” She emphasized that anganwadis are designed to provide nutritious meals for children and highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of food served.

"Under this government, a scheme to provide eggs and milk through anganwadis has been successfully implemented. In collaboration with the Department of Women and Child Development and local bodies, a variety of foods are already being offered," she added.

In the viral video, Shanku, wearing a cap, was seen innocently asking his mother, “I need ‘birnani’ (biryani) and ‘poricha kozhi’ (chicken fry) in the anganwadi instead of upma.” His mother later revealed that she had recorded the video while he was enjoying biryani at home and posted it on Instagram, where it quickly gained traction.

Following the viral clip, several individuals came forward, offering to fulfill Shanku’s request by providing him with biryani and chicken fry. Meanwhile, netizens widely supported the child’s demand, with some even suggesting that the government should reconsider prison food budgets and focus more on improving meal quality for children in anganwadis.

This unexpected yet endearing request has now set the stage for potential menu improvements in Kerala’s anganwadis, ensuring that children receive not just nutritious but also enjoyable meals.
