Calls for Urgent Discussion on National Security Developments Amidst Cross-Border Tensions
Kalaburagi (Karnataka), May 12 — Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Monday renewed his demand for a special session of Parliament to address critical national security issues, including the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the recent India-Pakistan ceasefireagreement.Speaking to the media, Kharge emphasized the need for urgent parliamentary deliberation, highlighting that both he and Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had formally written to Prime Minister Narendra Modiseeking the special session.
In his letter sent on Sunday, Kharge conveyed the unanimous support from opposition parties for such a session, urging that the Parliament must debate recent incidents and formulate cohesive strategies to ensure national security.“We want the session to be convened to discuss what is happening in our country, in Pakistan, and other developments, along with what measures we can take to safeguard our people,” Kharge said.
Ceasefire with Pakistan: A Fragile Peace?
Referring to the recent India-Pakistan understanding to halt all military actions, Kharge expressed cautious optimism. He remarked that while India honours peace agreements, Pakistan has a history of violating them. The ceasefire agreement, announced after four days of intense drone and missile strikes, was first indicated from Washington DC and later confirmed by the governments of both India and Pakistan.“They don’t fight directly—they use terrorists to wage war. If they fight, we will be forced to fight. If they remain quiet, we too will maintain peace,” he stated.
A Call for Unity and Preparedness
On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, Kharge invoked the teachings of Lord Buddha, advocating peace but also underscoring the need for national preparedness. He lauded the Indian armed forces for their courage and commitment, stating that their sacrifices must be acknowledged and supported by all citizens. “Everyone should unite for the country and stand strong for it,” he concluded.“India has followed his teachings for over two thousand years. We wish for peace everywhere... But to protect the country, we must be prepared to fight,” he added.
Kharge’s appeal puts the spotlight back on Parliament’s role in addressing national security challenges, urging transparency and collective resolve at a time of heightened tension across India’s borders.
