Kolhapur Police Register Case Over Threats to Historian, Derogatory Remarks on Shivaji Maharaj

Mumbai, February 26: The Kolhapur police have registered a case against an individual accused of threatening historian Indrajeet Sawant and making derogatory remarks against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Authorities are currently investigating the matter.

According to officials, Sawant, a resident of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, received a call in the early hours of Tuesday. The caller, who identified himself as 'Prashant Koratkar,' allegedly threatened to kill Sawant, accusing him of inciting hatred against the Brahmin community. Additionally, the caller made offensive comments about the revered Maratha warrior king and his son.

Sawant recorded the call and shared the audio clip on his social media platform before filing a complaint with the Juna Rajwada police in Kolhapur. Based on his complaint, police have booked the unidentified individual under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
  • Section 196 & 197 – Pertaining to promoting enmity or disharmony between different groups
  • Section 299 – Outraging religious feelings
  • Section 151 – Protecting autonomy and authority of high-ranking officials
  • Section 352 – Provocation and insult
Authorities are working with the cyber cell to trace the caller's identity and gather technical evidence for further investigation.
