Bereaved Family Demands Justice Amid Questions Over Women's Safety in West Bengal
The mother of the junior doctor from Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, who was brutally raped and murdered last year, has expressed her desire to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally appeal for justice for her daughter. Speaking poignantly on International Women's Day, she also raised serious concerns regarding women's security in West Bengal.
"I would like to meet the PM and appeal to him to intervene in the matter and look into our appeal for justice for our deceased doctor," said the grieving mother. Her 31-year-old daughter, a junior medic at the state-run RG Kar Hospital, was assaulted and killed within hospital premises on August 9 last year, sparking widespread national outrage.
Justice Delayed, Parents Await Closure
Seven months after the incident, the family continues to wait for closure. Highlighting their plight, the victim's mother stated, "Our daughter had dreamt big, and we never thought that she would have to die like this. It's been seven months since she left us, but where is justice? We do not even have the death certificate."
She further raised critical questions about workplace safety for women, emphasizing, "If a woman doctor is unsafe at her workplace, then where is her security?"
BJP MLA Assures Support, TMC Highlights Government Action
Reacting to the mother's request to meet PM Modi, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul responded positively, asserting, "There is a process to seek an appointment with the PM. I am sure that our Prime Minister will give them (the parents) some time and listen to their appeal."
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya highlighted the state government's swift response to the incident, noting, "Anybody in this country has the right to seek an appointment with the PM and meet him. But we must not forget that it was our leader Mamata Banerjee who had taken the first step and the culprit was arrested."
Convict Sentenced, Capital Punishment Appeal Pending
On January 20, a sessions court in Kolkata sentenced Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer convicted in the rape-and-murder case, to life imprisonment till death. However, both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government subsequently appealed to the Calcutta High Court seeking capital punishment for Roy.
On February 7, the Calcutta High Court declined the state government's plea challenging the life imprisonment verdict but admitted a similar appeal from the CBI, seeking the death penalty for the convict.
As the family continues their quest for justice, their plea for intervention from the Prime Minister remains a significant step forward, highlighting ongoing concerns about women's safety and justice delivery systems in India.
