Mumbai, January 27, 2025—Masdar has selected Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as a preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the north side of the world's first 24/7 solar PV and battery storage gigascale project, which will be developed in Abu Dhabi.
The project, announced at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), is a joint initiative between Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). It is designed to deliver 1 gigawatt (GW) of continuous baseload power, utilizing a 5.2GW solar PV plant integrated with a massive 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS)—making it the largest solar and BESS project in the world. The development will be divided into north and south sites, each with a 2.6GW PV capacity.
The Letter of Award was signed by Mr. Abdulaziz Alobaidli, COO of Masdar, and Mr. A Ravindran, Senior Vice President & Head – Renewables IC, L&T, in the presence of Mr. T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Sr. Executive VP (Utilities), L&T.
