Mumbai, Feb 28 – Denmark-based shipping giant Maersk has reaffirmed its commitment to India with plans to invest approximately $5 billion in ports, terminals, and land-side infrastructure development. The announcement was made during the naming ceremony of its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, Albert Maersk, at the APM Terminal in Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

Maersk's CEO, Vincent Clerc, emphasized India’s pivotal role in global trade, citing its rapid economic growth, expanding exports, and booming manufacturing and e-commerce industries. "India is not just a key market but a beacon of confidence in global trade," he stated.

Strengthening India's Maritime and Logistics Sector

Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Maharashtra's Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Raksha Khadse, and APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen, attended the event. Clerc highlighted India’s geographic advantage and its reliance on a robust supply chain network. He expressed Maersk’s full commitment to furthering its presence in the country.

Maersk has made significant investments in India over the years, spanning ports, terminals, warehouses, technology, and global capability centers. The recent expansion at Jawaharlal Nehru Port now allows larger vessels to dock, while upcoming developments at the APMT facility in Kerala will enhance capacity and efficiency.

"Looking ahead, our commitment to India will only grow. We see an investment pipeline of around $5 billion in ports, terminals, and land-side infrastructure," Clerc said.

Advancing Green Shipping Initiatives

As part of its global sustainability efforts, Maersk is ramping up investments in low-emission shipping. The newly named Albert Maersk is the eleventh vessel in its fleet capable of operating on methanol, aligning with the company’s goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Minister Sonowal welcomed Maersk’s investment, particularly in green fuel production. "India has the potential to become a major producer and supplier of green methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen-based fuels," he said, adding that the naming of Albert Maersk in Indian waters is a symbol of trust and collaboration in shaping a sustainable maritime future.

Enhancing Logistics Efficiency

Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals, underscored the importance of reducing logistics costs by integrating all supply chain solutions, including multimodal transportation, port handling, warehousing, and distribution. He reiterated the company’s commitment to developing efficient and low-emission ports to better connect India with global markets.

Albert Maersk is part of a series of 18 large dual-fuel methanol vessels scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025. Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, it has a capacity of 16,592 TEUs, further enhancing Maersk’s sustainable shipping capabilities.

With India’s growing focus on the maritime sector and sustainability, Maersk’s strategic investments are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of green shipping and logistics in the country.
