Panaji, Feb 5 (PTI) – In a significant initiative, the Goa government has announced the operation of three special trains to transport devotees free of cost to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela.
The first train will depart from Margao railway station in South Goa at 8:00 AM on February 6, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed to reporters on Tuesday. Two additional trains will follow, scheduled to leave on February 13 and February 21, he added.
Each of the specially designated trains will accommodate around 1,000 passengers and travel exclusively between Goa and Prayagraj.
Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai explained that the train journey, along with food provided en-route, would be entirely free for the devotees. The train ride will take approximately 34 hours, with the destination being Prayagraj, where passengers will be responsible for their own accommodation and meals.
Devotees will need to board their return trains from Prayagraj after a 24-hour stay, as per the guidelines.
This initiative is part of the state’s "Mukhyamantri Dev Darshan Yojana," aimed at facilitating religious travel for citizens. Eligibility for the free travel is restricted to individuals aged between 18 and 60, with no significant health conditions.
This special arrangement is expected to provide much-needed assistance for devotees wishing to take part in the sacred Maha Kumbh rituals.
