New Delhi/Prayagraj, Feb 3 (PTI) – The tragic stampede during the Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya at the ongoing Maha Kumbh, which claimed 30 lives and left 60 others injured, has sparked intense political criticism. Allahabad Lok Sabha MP Ujjwal Raman Singh on Monday held both the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government accountable, demanding a public apology for their failure in managing the grand religious gathering.

Speaking during the debate on the President's Address in the Lok Sabha, the Congress MP expressed deep condolences for the victims, lambasting the authorities for prioritizing publicity over proper planning and safety measures.

"Is This Governance or Sheer Incompetence?"

Singh criticized the BJP-led "double-engine" government, accusing it of aggressively promoting the Maha Kumbh without ensuring adequate infrastructure to handle the massive influx of devotees.

"The chief ministers and ministers extensively promoted the event, inviting people from across the country, but when they arrived, they were left at the mercy of fate. Is this governance or sheer incompetence?" he questioned.
Identifying two key causes behind the stampede, Singh highlighted:

  1. The closure of pontoon bridges, which restricted smooth crowd movement.
  2. Excessive VIP movement, leading to major disruptions in public mobility.
The MP painted a grim picture of the devotees' ordeal, stating that many were forced to walk 20 km barefoot at night, lacking basic amenities such as rest stops, toilets, or drinking water. He pointed out that fatigue and exhaustion led to several collapses, while authorities failed to regulate the crowd.

Allegations of Corruption and Poor Infrastructure

Singh further alleged large-scale corruption in Maha Kumbh preparations, particularly in the procurement of materials for crucial infrastructure.

"Why was a private firm given the contract to procure Rs 300 crore worth of sal wood sleepers instead of the government handling it directly? Why were key roads left incomplete despite the massive budget? On paper, everything was built, but the reality was far different," he alleged, demanding a thorough investigation.

Government's Insensitivity Under Fire

Slamming the government for its lack of accountability, Singh raised pointed questions about whose lives were truly at risk in the disaster.

"Did any VIP die in this stampede? Did any billionaire lose their life? No. The victims were ordinary devotees, farmers, laborers, and the poor."
He also criticized remarks that framed the tragedy as a path to "moksha" (salvation), asking sarcastically why those in power and privilege did not seek the same fate.

Ignored Warnings and Planning Failures

Singh claimed that he had been warning officials for over a year about inadequate arrangements but was never included in planning meetings. He accused the administration of last-minute execution, leading to chaotic mismanagement.

The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26 at Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, considered one of Hinduism's holiest sites.

As the opposition echoed his concerns in Parliament, the government now faces mounting pressure to address safety lapses, alleged corruption, and administrative failures that led to one of the deadliest tragedies of the festival.
