The new initiative is aimed at facilitating single-passenger travel for distances up to 15 km, particularly in densely populated urban areas.Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the decision following the weekly cabinet meeting held at the Sahaydri Guest House and chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Key Features of the E-Bike Taxi Policy
Minister Sarnaik outlined several important provisions under the new policy:- E-bike taxis must have a partition between the rider and the pillion passenger for safety.
- Monsoon-ready design will be mandatory, including a roof cover to ensure year-round usability.
- Security and affordability will remain top priorities while finalizing the tariff structure.
Empowering Families of Public Transport Drivers
In a move to support socio-economically disadvantaged families, Sarnaik stated that children of autorickshaw and taxi drivers associated with government-recognized boards and corporations will be eligible to apply for operating e-bike taxis. They will receive a financial aid of ₹10,000, with the remaining investment to be arranged through bank loans.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The policy is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region alone, with an additional 10,000 jobs across the rest of Maharashtra."This is our first step toward a pollution-free Maharashtra," Sarnaik emphasized. "We will structure tariffs in a way that reduces travel costs—for example, ensuring that a journey costing ₹100 today could be brought down to ₹30–40."
The policy aims to offer an economical and green alternative to short-distance commuting while promoting local employment and reducing traffic congestion.
