Thane, March 1: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the importance of sports in fostering team spirit and assured full governmental support to athletes from the state’s police force aiming to compete at premier international tournaments, including the Olympic Games.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 35th Maharashtra Police Sports Meet held in Thane, Fadnavis highlighted that sports activities present an ideal platform for police personnel to showcase their talent and teamwork.
Launch of 'Mission Olympics' for Police Athletes
To align with India's aspirations of hosting the 2036 Olympics, the Maharashtra government has launched a dedicated initiative, aptly named 'Mission Olympics', specifically designed to integrate police teams into the country's preparations for this prestigious global event.Addressing the athletes and attendees, Fadnavis stated, "Sports foster team spirit. This is a great opportunity for police personnel to showcase their talent. The government will provide all necessary support to ensure our police athletes can compete at the highest levels, including the Olympics."
Concerns Over Reduced Participation in Police Sports Meet
While expressing strong support for sports promotion within the police department, Chief Minister Fadnavis also voiced concerns over the declining number of participants in this year's police sports meet. Notably, the participant count dropped from 3,500 in the 2024 edition to 2,900 in 2025.He urged the Director General of Police (DGP) to investigate the reasons behind this decline and implement corrective actions to ensure robust participation in future events.
Encouraging Growth in Women’s Participation
Despite overall participation declining, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the increased representation of women athletes at this year's event, highlighting it as a positive trend that should continue in future competitions.Fadnavis reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and support mechanisms for police personnel, envisioning Maharashtra’s athletes excelling on national and international platforms, especially the Olympics.
