Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Feb 3 (PTI): In the wake of the shocking murder of a village sarpanch in Maharashtra’s Beed district, authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal firearms, cancelling 183 gun licences over the past month, a senior official confirmed on Monday.

The move comes as part of a broader review, with police also recommending the cancellation of 127 more licences. Additionally, eight licence holders have voluntarily surrendered their permits. Notices have been issued in 189 cases where weapon licences were granted before 1990, with the entire review expected to conclude by the end of next month.

Sarpanch's Murder Triggers Action

The focus on firearms in Beed intensified after the brutal murder of Massajog village sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh on December 9, 2024. Deshmukh was abducted, tortured, and killed for allegedly attempting to stop an extortion racket targeting an energy firm. So far, seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder case.

In a related extortion case, authorities have also arrested Walmik Karad, a close aide of Maharashtra NCP minister Dhananjay Munde, further escalating political tensions in the region.

Ajit Pawar’s Stern Warning

Amid the growing controversy, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has taken a firm stance, cautioning against gun violence and illegal extortion. Addressing NCP workers in Beed last week, Pawar urged them to stay away from extortion rackets targeting development projects.

He also issued a warning against the public display of firearms.

“If anyone is found brandishing a revolver or firing in the air, their licence will be cancelled. I will not tolerate social media reels featuring weapons. The law will be equal for all, and change must be visible,” Pawar asserted.
With authorities tightening gun regulations and cracking down on crime, the Beed administration aims to restore law and order in the district, sending a strong message against unlawful activities.
