Mumbai, Feb 3 (PTI) — In a significant administrative move, the Maharashtra government has announced the appointment of 1.94 lakh Special Executive Officers (SEOs) to enhance governance and public service delivery. A government resolution (GR) issued on Monday confirmed that 33% of these positions will be reserved for women.

Under the revised system, each SEO will be responsible for approximately 500 voters, a notable improvement from the previous ratio of one officer per 1,000 voters. The initiative aims to improve accessibility to government services and ensure better implementation of welfare schemes, an official stated.

State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who also chairs the SEO Selection Committee, elaborated on the role of these officers. "The SEOs will be entrusted with 13 to 14 special powers, including issuing government certificates, participating in various panels, and coordinating with the administration and police. They will also monitor development projects and help implement government initiatives," he said. However, the government will not provide any monetary compensation for these roles.

The selection process will be overseen by district-level committees, with district collectors serving as member secretaries. To facilitate the new appointments, all existing SEO positions will be dissolved immediately.

According to the GR, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria, including a minimum educational qualification of Class 10, an age range of 25 to 65 years, and a tenure of five years. Additionally, the government has decided to appoint five distinguished award-winning individuals to these positions to enhance the role’s credibility.

"The revised decision will bring governance closer to the people, making essential government services more accessible. The 33% reservation for women will further promote inclusive governance," Bawankule added.
