Pune, Feb 4 (PTI) – The number of suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra has risen to 163 after five more cases were detected in Pune, a state health official confirmed on Monday.
So far, five fatalities have been reported due to the rare neurological disorder, although no new deaths were recorded on Monday. Of the total suspected cases, 127 have been confirmed as GBS.
The breakdown of the cases includes 32 from Pune city, 86 from recently incorporated villages in Pune Municipal Corporation limits, 18 from Pimpri-Chinchwad, 19 from rural Pune, and eight from other districts.
As per official data, 47 patients have been discharged, while 47 remain in intensive care units (ICU) and 21 are on ventilator support.
To investigate possible sources of contamination, health authorities have tested 168 water samples from different parts of Pune. Chemical and biological analysis at the Public Health Laboratory found contamination in samples from eight water sources.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, sensory loss in the limbs, and difficulties in swallowing or breathing. In severe cases, the condition can cause near-total paralysis. While the syndrome is more commonly observed in adults and males, it can affect individuals of all ages.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts are underway to determine the cause of the outbreak.
