Male leopard found dead in septic tank in UP village

Bahraich (UP), Feb 3 (PTI) – The carcass of a seven-year-old male leopard was found buried in a septic tank in Urra village, near the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division, on Monday, officials reported.

According to Division Forest Officer (DFO) B Shivshankar, the carcass was discovered behind the house of a farmer, Ranveer Maurya, outside the forested region in the Kakraha range. It was covered with soil, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding the leopard’s death.

Preliminary inspection confirmed that the leopard's vital organs, including its eyes, nails, and canines, were intact, indicating no immediate signs of poaching.

A postmortem examination was conducted by a panel of three veterinarians, following which the viscera of the leopard’s internal organs were preserved. The samples will be sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Izzatnagar, Bareilly, for further analysis to determine the cause of death.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into how the leopard ended up outside the forest area and whether foul play was involved.
