Kolkata, Feb 27 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of manipulating electoral rolls by enrolling fake voters from other states with the alleged support of the Election Commission (EC). She warned of launching an indefinite protest outside the EC’s office if corrective measures were not implemented.
Speaking at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) conference in Kolkata, Banerjee raised concerns over the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner, claiming that the BJP was attempting to exert influence over the constitutional body.
"It is evident how the BJP is manipulating the voters' list with the backing of the Election Commission," she asserted.
Banerjee recalled her 26-day hunger strike during the 2006 anti-land acquisition movement, indicating her readiness to lead a similar agitation against the EC if voter roll discrepancies were not addressed. She emphasized that the TMC would not hesitate to stage an indefinite sit-in outside the EC office to demand the removal of "fake electors" and correction of voter lists.
The Chief Minister accused the BJP of employing similar tactics in Delhi and Maharashtra by allegedly enrolling voters from Haryana and Gujarat to influence election outcomes.
"In Delhi and Maharashtra, the BJP won elections by bringing in fake voters from Haryana and Gujarat. Now, they are attempting the same in Bengal because they know they cannot win if elections are held freely and fairly," Banerjee alleged.
She further claimed that the BJP, with the EC’s assistance, was facilitating the entry of voters from other states into Bengal’s electoral rolls across multiple districts.
"We will identify and expose these fake voters. The BJP cannot bring outsiders to capture Bengal," she asserted.
As political tensions escalate in the state, Banerjee reaffirmed that the TMC would not allow a repeat of what she claims transpired in Delhi during assembly polls. Her remarks come as both the ruling TMC and opposition BJP prepare for a fierce electoral contest in the state.
