Kolkata, Feb 27: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly condemned the recent deportation of Indian immigrants from the United States in chains, calling it a "shameful" act. Addressing a party conference on Thursday, Banerjee criticized the BJP-led central government for its alleged inaction and questioned why it did not arrange special flights to ensure a dignified return for those deported.
Expressing her outrage, Banerjee stated, “Whenever elections approach, the BJP talks about infiltration, but our own citizens are being deported in chains. Why were they treated this way? This is a matter of national shame.”
She further drew a comparison with Colombia, highlighting that the South American nation had arranged planes to bring back its citizens, while India failed to extend the same level of support to its people. “If Colombia can send planes for its citizens, why can’t our central government do the same to ensure a humane return?” she questioned.
Banerjee’s remarks come amid a larger debate on immigration policies and the treatment of deported individuals. Her criticism of the Centre underscores concerns over the dignity and rights of Indian citizens facing deportation from foreign nations.
