Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh – April 11:
In a shocking case of suspected honour killing, police in Bahraich have arrested a man and his wife for allegedly strangling their 22-year-old nephew to death after discovering him in an "objectionable condition" with a girl from their family.
The victim, identified as Bhanu Pratap alias Sudhir, was found dead on March 29. His body was discovered stuffed inside a sack with a rope tied around his neck, dumped near a government school on the outskirts of Dharmanpur village.
According to police, Bhanu, a resident of Aurahi village in the district, was visiting his maternal uncle, Chetram Gautam, in Dharmanpur when the incident occurred. His father later filed a complaint accusing Chetram and his family of murder.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Durga Prasad Tiwari stated that a comprehensive investigation was conducted. Authorities examined CCTV footage, mobile phone records, call details, and witness accounts to establish the sequence of events.
"The evidence led us to Chetram and his wife, Sundari Devi," ASP Tiwari said. "During questioning, the couple confessed to the crime. They admitted to strangling Bhanu, placing his body in a sack, and tying a rope around his neck in an attempt to mislead investigators. The body was then transported on a motorcycle and dumped near the school."
A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death. Following the investigation, police arrested the couple on Thursday and sent them to jail.
Authorities are continuing to probe the incident to determine if other individuals were involved or if there are additional circumstances surrounding the motive.
