Viral Social Media Post Sparks Protests in Muzaffarnagar and Meerut
Muzaffarnagar/Meerut (UP), May 19 — A man identified as Amit Choudhry has been booked by police after a video of his alleged announcement offering a ₹5 lakh reward for the beheading of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait went viral on social media, triggering widespread protests.The FIR was registered at the Civil Lines Police Station in Muzaffarnagar following an uproar by BKU supporters. According to Station House Officer Ashutosh Kumar Singh, the matter is under investigation, and the motive behind the post is yet to be disclosed.
The viral video, which quickly circulated online, led to immediate backlash from Tikait's supporters. Hundreds of BKU activists, led by Muzaffarnagar district president Naveen Rathi, gathered in protest, demanding strict and swift police action. Rathi confirmed that he had filed a formal complaint against Choudhry.
In a parallel demonstration in Meerut, BKU members gheraoed the Jani police station. Meerut district president Anurag Chaudhary led the protest with a tractor-trolley rally and staged a sit-in at the station premises, pressing for legal action against the accused.
While authorities in both districts acknowledged the registration of FIRs, they refrained from sharing specific details about the accused or his motives, citing the ongoing investigation.
